Our Rokkii Derby Bound

Wednesday, 16th September 2015

New Zealand Gr1 performer He's Our Rokkii (Roc de Cambes-Clerihew, by Lomitas) made the perfect start to his Australian career yesterday when winning his maiden with ease at Benalla in Victoria, reports NZ Racing Desk. Having his first start for new trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, He's Our Rokkii (racing as Our Rokkii in NZ) raced wide throughout under a confident ride from Damian Lane to draw away for a comfortable 2.5-length win in the Westcourt Insurance - Shepparton Maiden Plate over 1200m. "Another couple of weeks work will really bring him on," Hayes said. "His coat hasn't come through yet." He added: "My horses usually trial a little bit doughy and come out of it and improve a lot. He raced a little bit dumb today but I was impressed that he could gather them in." Hayes will now look to step He's Our Rokkii up to 1400m at Flemington at his next outing as he plots a course towards the Gr1 VRC Derby at the same venue on October 31. Formerly prepared by Cambridge horseman Mark Forbes, He's Our Rokkii finished runner-up in the Gr3 Phoenix Park Classic at his second start before finishing fourth in the Gr1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes behind last season's champion 2YO Marky Mark.
