Pondarosa Miss Wins Trial

Wednesday, 16th September 2015

High-class New Zealand mare Pondarosa Miss (High Chaparral-Bak da Princess, by Danske) rounded off her preparations for Saturday's Gr1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings with a 1000m barrier trial win on her home track at Te Awamutu yesterday, reports NZ Racing Desk. Accustomed to racing in blinkers, the Melbourne Cup bound Pondarosa Miss trialled without them on Tuesday, a gear change that will again be in effect on Saturday. "It was a good trial," trainer Peter Hollinshead said. "She looked to be running straight with the blinkers off today." He added: "She won't do much between now and Saturday. I think she'll go a nice race but the further she goes the better she will be. It will be a very good horse that beats Kawi [on Saturday]." Pondarosa Miss fought back from career threatening injuries to win the Gr1 Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie in April, but it was her third placing in the Gr1 Auckland Cup (3200m) in March that showed she had the requisite stamina to be a legitimate Melbourne Cup horse.
