Guineas Prelude Next For Spieth
Trainer Bryce Heys is hoping that exciting colt Speith can measure up to Gr1 company in the spring following his impressive maiden victory at Pakenham yesterday. Having just his second career start after an excellent debut second at Sandown two weeks ago, the New Zealand bred 3YO put that experience to good use with a fast-finishing 1.25-length win in the Burdens Plumbtec Maiden Plate over 1200m. Heys has long held the striking chestnut in high regard, and will run him in the Gr3 Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on 26 September in the hope he can progress on to the $1 million Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) two weeks later. "He's going like a good horse at home so to see him race as greenly as he did is a bit of a mystery but we will continue to iron that out," Heys said. "He's going to be a nice horse going forward." Winning rider Craig Williams also predicted bigger things in store for Spieth. "I like the horse. When he walks into the yard, he's a magnificent type," he said. "He's a very nice horse with a bright future." Spieth is by Thorn Park out of the Titus Livius mare Stella Livia and hails from the world famous Fanfreluche family that includes champion Australian sires Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur.
