Petagna Set For Big Day Out In Sydney

Friday, 18th September 2015

Wellington businessman Lib Petagna will be well represented at Randwick tomorrow with smart racemare Lucia Valentina lining up in the Gr1 George Main Stakes (1600m), as well as promising filly Sofia Rosa lining up in the Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) on the undercard, reports NZ Racing Desk. Petagna is likely to fly to Sydney to watch the pair race, though only if both run, as his racing manager Bruce Perry said Lucia Valentina was not certain to run unless there was rain. The dual Gr1-winning mare made an eye-catching return in the Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick 11 days ago, when she flashed home for sixth (beaten just 1.6-lengths) and recorded the fastest closing sectionals of the day. "There is rain forecast and we are hoping she will run but backing her up after two weeks on a firm track would be asking a bit much of her and she could wait another week and head to Caulfield for the Underwood Stakes instead," Perry said. "Her second-up record is only so-so but Kris [Lees, trainer] said there was no real reason for that. She's very well and a lot stronger this time in. We can see no reason why she can't be right in it on Saturday." The Stephen Marsh-trained Sofia Rosa will make her Australian debut in the Tea Rose Stakes, having travelled to Sydney earlier this week. The 3YO daughter of Makfi is coming off a brilliant first-up win at Hastings last month. "Stephen was a bit concerned about going to Sydney. She's still a bit immature and doesn't carry a lot of condition but she's put on weight since that run, she's travelled well and settled straight into her routine. He's happy with her," Perry said. "If she runs up to her Hawke's Bay form, she can win it." Should Sofia Rosa perform up to expectations she will remain in Sydney for the Gr1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 3.
