Rebel Dane Wins Gr2 Shorts

Monday, 21st September 2015

At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Baerami Thoroughbreds stallion California Dane (Danehill-Storminwinter, by Seattle Slew) added a Group success when 6YO entire Rebel Dane (California Dane-Texarcana, by More Than Ready) scored by 0.1-length for trainer Gary Portelli in the $200,000 Gr2 Shorts (1100m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi-Parfore, by Gold Brose) & 6YO gelding Shiraz (Zariz-Moville Slipper, by Moville Dancer). This was an outstanding training performance by Gary Portelli, who nursed Rebel Dane back to health after the 6YO underwent surgery earlier in the year to correct a paralysed larynx which was inhibiting his breathing. "My legs are like jelly right now. It's been a big effort to get him back and thank god he's come back in fighting order," Portelli told Sky Racing. "He just showed his quality – he doesn't win by very far but he knows how to win." He added: "Now he's had his throat tied back I think we might have a really big spring ahead of us." Rebel Dane took his record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes,  Gr2 Royal Sovereign Stakes & Gr3 Show County Handicap) & 4 placings (the Gr1 Moir Stakes & Gr2 Hobartville Stakes) from 23 starts for $1,495,630 earnings.
