History Against Sofia's Flight Stakes Bid
Cambridge filly Sofia Rosa (Makfi-Bislieri, by Encosta de Lago) will attempt to buck a recent trend in her next appearance in Sydney, reports NZ Racing Desk. Her effort to finish sixth in last Saturday's Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes has earned her a shot at the Gr1 Flight Stakes, also at Randwick, on October 3. "She got anchored in the worst part of the track on the inside and she was only beaten three lengths," trainer Stephen Marsh said. "She's come through the race well and she's really starting to bloom over there. She'll head to the Flight Stakes and then come home and have a spell." However, Sofia Rosa will have to defy history as a high percentage of recent Flight Stakes winners have either won or placed in the Tea Rose at their previous start. First Seal (2014), Guelph (2013), More Joyous (2009), Samantha Miss (2008), Cheeky Choice (2006), Ha Ha (2001) and Unworldly (2000) all completed the double while Fashions Afield (2005) and Unearthly (2003) placed in the Tea Rose before winning the only Gr1 races for fillies during the Sydney spring carnival. The last New Zealand-trained winner of the Flight Stakes was the mighty Sunline (1998) and she too had also previously claimed the Tea Rose.
