Alan Thomas Announces Retirement

Thursday, 24th September 2015

Sky Channel's popular Queensland race caller Alan Thomas has announced that he will retire at the end of the year, reports Sky Racing. Thomas, 63, will call his last race on Boxing Day before focusing his attention on his Gold Coast real estate business at Main Beach which he launched earlier this year. Beginning his career in radio in the 1960s, Thomas headed Channel Nine's Brisbane sports department in the lead-up to the 1982 Commonwealth Games. He spent 13 years at the Nine network before joining Sky Channel as its leading race caller in Queensland. "Alan Thomas has been an outstanding race caller and advocate of Queensland racing," said Tabcorp's General Manager Channels, Gerard Patane. "For many years, his voice has been synonymous with Queensland's premier races such as the Stradbroke Handicap." He added: "We wish Alan all the best in the future and plan to acknowledge his contribution with a special farewell in December." Sky Racing has commenced the process of appointing its next principal Queensland race caller.
