The Cleaner Better Than Last Time: Burles
Tasmanian trainer Mick Burles says that cult hero The Cleaner is in top shape ahead of Saturday's Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. The evergreen 8YO showed he was in career best form when scoring an impressive 1.75-length win in the Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley three weeks ago, and Burles says he has improved from the run. "I think he's even better, well I know he is...but anyway we'll find out on Saturday," Burles told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. Burles said he chose the Underwood as The Cleaner's final Cox Plate lead-up because the timing of the JRA Cup, which he contested last year, was too close to the Cox Plate. "I thought the night race that I ran him in last year at Moonee Valley [JRA Cup] as a lead-up was a bit close to the Cox Plate, so I decided to go to the Underwood and that gives me plenty of time. It will give me three weeks to get him ready," he said. "If I think he needs another run you've got other races such as the Caulfield Stakes, but I don't really want to [give him another run]." The Cleaner's primary spring target is the Gr1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on 24 October.
