Beholder Wins Gr1 Zenyatta Stakes

Monday, 28th September 2015

Spendthrift Australia principal B. Wayne Hughes' Champion 5YO US mare Beholder (Henny Hughes-Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek) turned in yet another flawless performance at Santa Anita in the US when recording an easy 3.25-lengths victory for trainer Richard Madella in the US$300,000 Gr1 Zenyatta Stakes (8.5 furlongs). Winning the Gr1 Zenyatta Stakes for an incredible third time, Beholder took her impeccable record to 15 wins (also including last month's Gr1 Pacific Classic, Gr1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes, Gr1 Ogden Phipps Stakes, Gr1 Kentucky Oaks, Gr1 Santa Anita Oaks, Gr1 Santa Ynez Stakes, Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff & Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies) & 3 placings from 20 starts for US$4,436,000 earnings. "It really was pretty much what I had hoped for from her," trainer Richard Mandella told Blood Horse. "I hate to say easy, but it really did look easy. She's good; she's really, really good." Beholder's facile victory sets up a potential clash with Triple Crown hero American Pharoah in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on 31 October.
