First US Group Winner For Lonhro
At Belmont in the US, former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning Darley World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) celebrated his first Group winner in the US when 2YO colt Isotherm (Lonhro-Game for More, by More Than Ready) scored by a neck for trainer George Weaver in the US$200,000 Gr3 Pilgrim Stakes (8.5 furlongs) for 2YOs, over fellow 2YO colt Azar (Scat Daddy-Miss Ocean City, by Mineshaft) & Ray's The Bar (Exceed and Excel-Cosmic Fire, by Dalakhani). Isotherm took his record to 2 wins from 3 starts for US$173,950 earnings. Isotherm becomes the first stakes and graded stakes winner in the US for Lonhro, whose first North American-sired runners are juveniles. Australia's 2004 Racehorse of the Year and 2011 leading sire stood at Darley's Jonabell Farm from 2012-2014. "We bought him in the Keeneland September sale last year," said owner Matthew Schera. "We all loved him. Everyone can see he's one of the prettier horses around. I kept telling everyone that he trains better than he ran last time, but he still won, so we kind of expected something more today and it looks like he came out and he did it. We even think he likes the dirt too, so we'll see down the road for that. As long as he comes out good and he's healthy, we'll go to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf [30 October]."
