Lumiere Wins Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes

Monday, 28th September 2015

At Newmarket in the UK, European champion 4-time Gr1-winning former Darley shuttler Shamardal (Giant's Causeway-Helsinki, by Machiavellian) added a Gr1 success to his CV when boom 2YO filly Lumiere (Shamardal-Screen Star, by Tobougg) scored a half-length victory for trainer Mark Johnson in the £180,000 Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes (6 furlongs) for 2YO fillies, over fellow fillies Illuminate (Zoffany-Queen of Stars, by Green Desert) & Besharah (Kodiac-Dixieland Kiss, by Dixie Union). Tagged as a potential world-beater after a stunning 6-length maiden victory and astonishing track work, Lumiere took her record to 2 wins & a runner-up (in last start's Gr2 Lowther Stakes) from 3 starts for £161,420 earnings. Lumiere's 4th dam is the Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Outstandingly. In the subsequent post-race conversations about next season's Gr1 1,000 Guineas, Johnson told the national.ae, "I haven't been as nervous as this going in to a big race because she is the best horse that I have had in a long, long, time. I told someone three weeks ago I didn't know about the Cheveley Park, but I'm sure she'll win the Guineas. I just hope I'm right."
