Logan Encouraged By Volkstok'n'barrell Run
Donna Logan says she has taken plenty of positives out of the performance of Volkstok'n'barrell in Saturday's Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) in Melbourne, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Ruakaka trainer was buoyed by her stable star's effort to finish fifth behind Mourinho in the time-honoured event, considering he is yet to reach peak fitness. "I was really pleased with his run," said Logan, who trains the 4YO in partnership with Chris Gibbs. "He was only 2.4 lengths from the winner and I was happy that, given his fitness levels at this stage. They are all Group One weight-for-age horses in front of him and he's not at his peak yet." She added: "He certainly isn't disgracing himself. He's a year older and he is taking a little bit longer to come to it. He had a really good blow afterwards so that will help to tighten him up and he's going in the right direction." Logan said Volkstok'n'barrell's next run will determine if he targets the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate. "We've got the option of the Turnbull Stakes next Sunday, but I'm not too fussed about backing him up so we'll probably go to the Caulfield Stakes," she said. "We'll decide after that if he goes into the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate. If he runs well again then it becomes hard to say we're not going to the Cox Plate."
