NZ Derby Plans Finally Fall Into Place For Capella

Thursday, 3rd March 2016

Just when connections of Saturday's Gr1 New Zealand Derby runners thought they'd worked out tactics, the left-field entry of exciting 3YO filly Capella (Rip Van Winkle-Limeric, by Grosvenor) has muddied the waters. According to NZ Racing Desk, Capella – ironically originally set for the Derby – was heading to the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks, however a rousing piece of track work has prompted trainer Danica Guy to switch direction and take on the colts & geldings at Ellerslie. Winner of the Gr2 Eight Carat Classic, Capella suffered a double whammy when unable to run in either the Gr2 Royal Stakes "due to unsuitable conditions" or the Gr1 Levin Classic when she displayed an elevated temperature. In her latest effort earlier this month, where she clearly needed the run after a 7-week break, Capella placed in the Gr2 Sir Tristram Fillies' Classic (2000m).
