Le Romain Wins Gr1 Randwick Guineas
At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & 2007 Gr1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun (Danzig-Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 3YO gelding Le Romain (Hard Spun-Mignard, by Strategic) scored by 0.2-length for trainer Kris Lees in the $1 million Gr1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) for 3YOs, over 3YO colt Press Statement (Hinchinbrook-Kaaptive Empress, by Kaaptive Edition) & fellow 3YO gelding Gold Ambition (Savabeel-Senorita Lucy, by Senor Pete). This was the first stakes victory for the underrated Le Romain who took his record to 3 wins and 4 placings (including the Gr2 ATC Hobartville Stakes) from 7 starts for $788,025 earnings. Trainer Kris Lees said that Le Romain had continued to improve throughout his preparation. "It's a great thrill," Lees told Sky Racing. "He's shown me at home that he is on an upward spiral. Every time we gallop him he just works that little bit better." He added: "It's good to see him get home...he's a pretty smart horse." Lees indicated that Le Romain would not progress to the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in two weeks time. "He won't get much further," Lees said. "He's probably a genuine seven furlong horse." Le Romain is the 47th stakes-winner and the ninth individual Gr1 winner for his US-bred sire Hard Spun.
