Rangipo Wins Gr1 New Zealand Derby
At Ellerslie in New Zealand, Three Bridges Thoroughbreds' Gr3-winning stallion Stryker (Fastnet Rock-Laetitia, by Woodman) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 3YO gelding Rangipo (Stryker-Holloway Castle, by Zabeel) scored by a short head for trainer Tony Pike in the NZ$750,000 Gr1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) for 3YOs, over 3YO colts What's The Story (Savabeel (AUS) 2001 out of Tall Story (NZ) 1998, by Carnegie) & Raghu (Showcasing-Fantasy World, by Zabeel). Rangipo took his record to 7 wins (including the Gr2 Avondale Guineas, Gr2 Waikato Guineas & Gr2 Great Northern Guineas) and 1 placing from 12 starts for NZ$684,570 earnings. Rangipo capped a remarkable 3YO season with his seventh win in New Zealand's time-honoured blue riband event. "It's a great thrill," trainer Tony Pike told NZ Racing Desk. "It's one of the classics and I've won a 2000 Guineas (Sacred Falls), an Oaks (More Than Sacred) and now the Derby so I've got the treble." Jockey Vinnie Colgan who claimed his sixth Derby win after victories aboard Roysyn (1995), Zonda (1997), Hades (1999), Redoute's Dancer (2007) and Habibi (2013), commented: "He was off the bridle a bit on the turn and I was worried, but he really showed his determination and he just keeps going."
