Palentino Possible Australian Cup Starter
Trainer Darren Weir says he is seriously considering backing up Australian Guineas hero Palentino (Teofilo-Palatine Hill, by Palace Music) in Saturday's $1.5 million Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington. Palentino survived a protest from the runner-up Tarzino to claim his maiden top-flight success, and Weir sees no reason not to run against the older horses this weekend. "At this stage, it [the Australian Cup] is on the radar for sure," Weir told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "A lot of them don't eat up when they get home, but there was no feed left in his feed bin on Sunday morning." He added: "All the signs were right yesterday [Sunday], so we'll just monitor him over the next couple of days, and hopefully he does well enough so we can back him up Saturday. If all the signs are right we will run." Whether or not Palentino lines up on Saturday, Weir believes the talented colt's best days are ahead of him. "He's a horse that's definitely going to get better with another break," he said. "I can see him in six months being a much better horse, because he still looks very immature in the mounting yard."
