Retirement Beckons For Pondarosa Miss
The end is nigh for talented New Zealand mare Pondarosa Miss (High Chaparral - Bak da Princess, by Danske) who is likely to have two more starts at Gr1 level before she is retired, reports NZ Racing Desk. A minor injury has ruled the 5YO daughter of High Chaparral out of Saturday's Gr1 Auckland Cup (3200m) and her farewell appearances will now take in two feature miles. "She just hit a leg at the wrong time and missed a bit of work so she's out of the cup," said co-owner Darrell Hollinshead, who bred Pondarosa Miss with his father and trainer Peter. "We'll freshen her up now and we'll look toward the Breeders' Stakes at Te Aroha and the Easter Handicap and then she'll probably go to the broodmare paddock." Pondarosa Miss has always shown well above ability but unfortunately has to battle injuries and viruses throughout her career. However, she showed what she is capable of when finishing third in last year's Gr1 Auckland Cup behind Rock Diva before scoring a brilliant win in the Gr1 Easter Handicap (1600m) defeating fellow Gr1 winners Vespa and Kawi.
