Suavito To Relish Cup Trip

Wednesday, 9th March 2016

Trainer Nigel Blackiston believes star mare Suavito (Thorn Park-Queen Cha Cha, by High Chaparral) has had the perfect grounding for Saturday's Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington. The 5YO Thorn Park mare kicked off her autumn campaign with a brilliant win in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield on 13 February, before finishing third to Turn Me Loose when attempting to defend her title in the Gr1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) last start. Blackiston says those two seven furlong races should have Suavito primed to run a strong 2000 metres on the weekend, a distance she is already proven at having won the 2014 edition of the Gr2 Matriarch Stakes at Flemington. "I think with the work she's done this week leading into Saturday, the 2000 metres is perfect for her," Blackiston told AAP. "She's had two tough runs at 1400 metres and I think she was looking for the mile the other day." Blackiston concedes that with the likes of Bow Creek, Preferment, Palentino, Fawkner, Rising Romance, and Risque set to contest the $1.5 million feature, Suavito faces a big task, but he is confident she will be highly competitive. "She's coming out of two strong Group One races and strong form lines," he said. "Obviously Bow Creek is definitely one of the main opponents but there's others in this race." He added: "There's never such thing as an easy Group One. I've got a healthy respect for all the competition, but I wouldn't change her for any of them."
