First Mares In Foal To Muhaarar
Champion sprinter Muhaarar (Oasis Dream-Tahrir, by Linamix) has had his first ten mares scanned in foal, reports Racing Post. Muhaarar, who covered a limited book of 120 mares, stood his first season at stud this year at a fee of £30,000 at his owner-breeder Hamdan Al Maktoum's Nunnery Stud in Norfolk. Those mares in foal include Twilight Mistress, the dam of Gr1-winning sprinter Twilight Son and Gr3 winner Music Master, and Mktoum's Rifqah, the dam of Gr2 winner and first-season sire Mustajeeb. "We were diligent from the outset about selecting Muhaarar's first book of mares. We wanted to give him a group of mares that had variety and potential," said Shadwell's stud director Richard Lancaster. "We have waited a long time to have our own champion sprinter retire to stud and want to give him the best possible chance in his first crop." He added: "We are very grateful for the support we have had from breeders and look forward to Muhaarar's first foals in 2017." Other mares that have visited Muhaarar include Australian-bred Redoute's Choice mare Majmu, a winner of 6 of her 9 races in South Africa including the Gr1 Kenilworth Cape Fillies Guineas & Gr1 Empress Club Stakes. Muhaarar confirmed his status as one of the best European sprinters of the modern era when claiming four successive Gr1 victories last year. He also became the first British trained horse since Dayjur in 1990 to win three Gr1 sprints in a season. He retired with 7 wins (including the inaugural Gr1 Commonwealth Cup, Gr1 British Champion Sprint Stakes, Gr1 July Cup, Gr1 Prix Maurice de Gheest & Gr3 Greenham Stakes) from 11 starts for £1,198,939 earnings.
