Preferment Wins Gr1 Australian Cup

Monday, 14th March 2016

At Flemington in Melbourne, Cambridge Stud's deceased multiple Champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) celebrated an elite success when top-class 4YO entire Preferment (Zabeel-Better Alternative, by Flying Spur) was the beneficiary of an upheld protest when scoring by 0.1-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $1.5 million Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) for 3YO+, over fellow 4YO entire Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock-Awesome Planet, by Giant's Causeway) & 5YO mare Rising Romance (Ekraar-Post Romance, by Postponed). Preferment, who was purchased by Chris Waller Racing for $190,000 at the 2013 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Cambridge Stud, took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes, Gr1 Victoria Derby & G2 Hill Stakes) and 5 placings (including the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas & Listed Geelong Classic) from 19 starts for $2,438,405 earnings. Trainer Chris said Preferment would now be aimed at the $4 million Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in Sydney. "He's tremendous over 2000 metres – I'm not convinced he's a 2500 metre horse despite being a Victoria Derby winner," Waller told Racing.com. "The Queen Elizabeth is firmly on his agenda – he deserves to be there. He's a genuine weight-for-age 2000 metre performer."
