Purple Smile Wins Gr2 Adelaide Cup

Tuesday, 15th March 2016

At Morphettville in South Australia, Cambridge Stud's deceased multiple Champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a Group success when 5YO gelding Purple Smile (Zabeel-By Her Smile, by Defensive Play) scored by 0.2-length for trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig in the $400,000 Gr2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) for 3YO+, over 7YO gelding Tunes (Viscount-Tin Pan, by Commands) & 5YO mare Real Love (Desert King-Flaming Heart, by Salieri). Purple Smile, who is out of a half-sister to Gr1 Levin Classic winner Porotene Gem, took his record to 5 wins and 10 placings from 23 starts for $397,200 earnings. "It's a great thrill," co-trainer Tom Dabernig told Sky Racing after the race. "I wasn't that confident coming into the race but he is a Zabeel and he's tough." He added: "He sat wide in the run, he didn't have a lot of favours, but turning for home I could see he was still travelling well...he's a very tough and genuine horse." Jockey Stephen Baster commented: "It was a fantastic effort by this horse. He was a bit deep early but he really toughed it out...to his credit he was strong to the line." He added:" He proved to be the best stayer on the day."
