Australia's Only Female Racecaller To Call At Oakbank

Thursday, 17th March 2016

Punters listening to races at the world-famous Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival will notice a different voice calling the action – that of Australia's only female racecaller, Victoria Shaw. Shaw will call races at the popular event, held on March 26 and March 28, for the first time. She will be joined at the picturesque Hills track by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne, who plans to ride on both days. "It's a huge thrill and honour to be a part of a race day at such an iconic track and club. I'm looking forward to it," Melbourne-based Shaw said. "I pride myself on giving punters an accurate description of a race and have a lot of fun while I'm doing it." Oakbank Racing Club Chairman John Glatz said the club was committed to having females involved in all areas of the event. "Women play an important role in the racing industry more broadly and also in the success of Oakbank each year. In South Australia we have women working as stable hands, vets, jockeys, trainers and drivers, not to mention in many administrative roles in a wide range of areas," Mr Glatz said. "We're pleased to be able to have Victoria in the commentary box. She's one of the best there is and her passion for picnic racing made her a great choice for this year's event."
