Stamina Doubts For Preferment

Wednesday, 23rd March 2016

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller will use Saturday's Gr1 The BMW (2400m) as a guide to the spring for multiple Gr1 winner Preferment, reports racenet. Waller said Preferment's performance in the $1.5 million staying feature will largely determine if the son of Zabeel focuses on 2000 metre events or is set a more ambitious goal of targeting the Caulfield (2400m) and Melbourne Cups (3200m) in the spring. Waller has for some time expressed doubts about Preferment's stamina credentials, despite winning the Victoria Derby as a 3YO. "This will tell us once and for all if he stays," Waller said. "I'm not convinced he does but this is the race to find out." He added: "I think this is the perfect opportunity to find out if he does run 2400 (metres) or not and it will determine which way he heads in the spring." Jockey Hugh Bowman shares Waller's assessment of Preferment, who is coming off a win in the Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) on 12 March. "Even though we thought he was a genuine Melbourne Cup horse, I think that we've all come to the conclusion that his premium distance might be 2000 metres," Bowman told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday.
