Leebaz Wins Gr3 Easter Cup

Tuesday, 29th March 2016

At Caulfield in Melbourne, Cambridge Stud's deceased multiple Champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a Group success when 6YO gelding Leebaz (Zabeel-Polish Princess, by Polish Precedent) scored by 0.1-length for the training triumvirate of John, Wayne & Michael Hawkes in the $150,000 Gr3 Easter Cup (2000m) for 3YO+, over 5YO French-bred entire Guardini (Dalakhani-Guantana, by Dynaformer) & 5YO UK-bred gelding Observational (Galileo-Party, by Cadeaux Genereux). This was a welcome return to form by Leebaz who took his record to 8 wins (including the Gr2 Hollindale Stakes, Gr3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup & Gr3 Doncaster Mile Prelude) and 6 placings (including the Gr1 Doomben Cup) from 26 starts for $831,150 earnings. Leebaz was a $460,000 purchase by Hawkes Racing at the 2011 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Windsor Park Stud. From the stakes winning Polish Precedent mare Polish Princess, Leebaz is a half-brother to Gr2 Tulloch Stakes winner Polish Knight and is a direct descendant of outstanding producer Reprocolor, one of the foundation mares of the Weinfeld family's Meon Valley Stud in England. This is also the family of European Classic winners Cezanne, Colorspin, Kayf Tara, Opera House, Zee Zee Top, and Gr1 Prix de l'Opera runner-up Jazzi Top.
