New Zealand Derby winner Rangipo (Stryker-Holloway Castle, by Zabeel) has been sent to the spelling paddock and will be aimed at the spring carnival in Melbourne, reports the informant.co.nz. A winner of 7 of his 13 starts, the son of Stryker enjoyed a stellar domestic season with victories in the Gr1 New Zealand Derby, Gr2 Northern Guineas, Gr2 Waikato Guineas, and Gr2 Avondale Guineas. Rangipo then made his Australian debut when resuming with a slightly below par 9th place finish in the Gr3 Fred Best Classic at Doomben two weeks ago. The Fred Best was intended as a preparatory run for the Gr2 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on Saturday week, but trainer Tony Pike has decided to put the gelding aside until the spring. "We've turned him out and he'll have a nice spell in Queensland before he heads down to Melbourne," Pike said. "We were just on the back foot a little bit trying to get him ready for the Queensland Guineas, and in the end we decided it would be best to take the cautious approach and save him for the spring."
