Zarkava Sibling Wins In Sydney

Thursday, 2nd June 2016

Zourkhan, arguably the best bred horse racing anywhere in Australia yesterday, broke through for his first success since arriving in Australia when scoring a fast-finishing win in the Press Statement @ Vinery Handicap at Warwick Farm over 2200 metres. Purchased by trainer Chris Waller for €90,000 at last year's Arqana Autumn Sale in France, the Aga Khan homebred is by Shamardal out of the unraced mare Zarkasha (Kahyasi), best known as the dam of unbeaten Champion European filly Zarkava as well as Gr1-winning hurdler Zarkandar. The exceptional Zarkava (Zamindar) won all seven of her starts at two and three culminating with her sublime victory in the 2008 Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe where she swept through the field from an unpromising position to score by 2-lengths. She was the first filly or mare since Urban Sea (dam of Galileo and Sea The Stars) in 1993 to win the Arc. Zarkava won another four Gr1s, including the French Triple Crown for fillies, and was named 2008 European Horse of the Year. Stable representative Charlie Duckworth said he hoped Zourkhan's win would prove a stepping stone to bigger and better things. "He needs plenty of winding up but because he doesn't have a real sprint on him yet, but he sees out the distance well," he said. "Hopefully he can go on from here and do something," he said. "He is only lightly raced having had only a few starts in Europe so hopefully he can take a lot of confidence from this."
