Almanzor Wins Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club

Monday, 6th June 2016

At Chantilly in France, Gr1-winning stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) sired his first top-flight winner when 3YO colt Almanzor (Wootton Bassett-Darkova, by Maria's Mon) scored a surprise 1.5-length win at odds of 20-1 for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget in the Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club (10.5 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Zarak (Dubawi-Zarkava, by Zamindar) & Dicton (Lawman-Saying, by Giant's Causeway). Almanzor improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr3 Prix de Guiche) and 1 placing from 7 starts for €959,100 earnings. Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget told Racing Post: "I've always liked him and he was well drawn but you couldn't say before he was among the favourites. It is wonderful for Jean-Bernard (jockey). To win races like this is why we all get up every morning."
