Protectionist Makes Winning Return
The early signs appear positive that Protectionist may be slowly recapturing his best form judging by his brilliant return to racing at Dusseldorf in Germany on Sunday, reports Racing.com. The 6YO looked like the Protectionist of old when coasting to an effortless 3.25-length win in the Commerzbank Cup over 2200 metres. Following his 2014 Melbourne Cup victory, Protectionist failed to win another race under Kris Lees with connections putting his poor form down to a failure to adapt to Australian racing conditions. Australia's firm tracks were cited as the cause of bone bruising in all four of fetlocks with the disease referring secondary pain across Protectionist's back and hindquarter causing him to lose his action when placed under pressure. Consequently the decision was made to send the talented galloper back to his former trainer Andreas Wohler in Germany in the hope of reviving his career. Protectionist's next target is the Gr2 Hansa-Preis (2400m) at Hamburg on Sunday 3 July.
