Top Perth Mare To Target Melbourne Spring
Talented West Australian mare Wink And A Nod (Kaapstad-Irish Flirt, by Mr McGinty) will bid for further black-type success when she embarks on her first interstate campaign later in the year, reports the West Australian. Trainer Justin Warwick has confirmed that the Gr1 Myer Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on 29 October is a likely spring target for the multiple stakes winner. Other options include the Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) on 19 November or the Gr1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) a fortnight later. "I have a really high opinion of her and I believe there is a day where she can win at Group 1," said Warwick. "Everything will have to go her way because those races are tough, but she is at her very best now." Warwick will decide after Saturday's Gr3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) at Belmont whether to stretch Wink And A Nod out to 2000 metres for the first time in the Strickland Stakes on June 25. "I will look at the pattern of the finish before I decide if she will run in the Strickland," Warwick said. "She has the fastest closing finish of what is going around at the moment and I think she might get the 2000m." Wink And A Nod has won 14 of her 35 starts for $682,666 in prize money.
