Top Sprinter Ortensia Passes Away
It has been reported that three-time Gr1-winning racemare Ortensia (Testa Rossa-Aerate's Pick, by Picknicker) was euthanised over the weekend after developing a tumour in one of her lungs. She was 10. Forewoman for Ortensia's trainer Paul Messara, Leah Gavranich, paid tribute to the internationally successful sprinter. "I will miss you my girl, forever in awe of your achievements 3 G1's, 3 countries, 9 months. Until we meet again X," tweeted Gavranich. One of the best female sprinters of the last ten years, Ortensia won 13 of her 38 starts for over $2.4 million prize money. Already a Gr1 winner of the Winterbottom Stakes before heading overseas at the beginning of 2012, the daughter of Testa Rossa proceeded to land the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr1) in Dubai and then the time-honoured Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr1) at York in August of the same year. Ortensia's legacy will live on through her offspring. She has an unnamed yearling filly by Choisir, and unnamed weanling filly by Dream Ahead, and she was served by Arrowfield's multiple champion Australian sire Redoute's Choice last season.
