Gr1 Target For Exciting Vega Magic
Exciting young West Australian sprinter Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) will be aimed at the Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes later in the year, reports the West Australian. The 3YO improved his record to 5 wins from 8 starts when romping to an impressive 5.5-length win in a 1200m benchmark race at Belmont on Saturday. Trainer Sean Casey has decided to bypass the $100,000 Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) on 25 June to keep chasing the Westspeed bonuses over shorter courses until the end of the season. "He definitely will get further, but he can stay at the short courses while he is eligible for the bonuses," Casey said. "He is getting the same stake money as he would in a feature race and with the times he is running over the short course, we can wait." Casey has mapped out a tentative programme that includes the Gr3 Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) on 29 October, and the Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) on 12 November as lead-up races for the weight-for-age Winterbottom (1200m) on 26 November. "My wife Kristy did the early work on Vega Magic, because I was away in Broome. He stamped himself then as a horse who was gifted," said Casey. "It was always the plan to nurse him along because we believed he would not mature until he was four years old." Interestingly, Vega Magic hails from the same female family as Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Century Miss.
