Provocative Classic Decision Today
Trainer Tony Pike will make a final decision this morning as to whether Provocative runs in the Queensland Oaks or Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm this Saturday, reports theinformant.co.nz. Pike raised the possibility of the talented Kiwi filly running against the boys in the Derby after she drew awkwardly in barrier 20 for the Oaks, but he says the fillies classic remains the most likely option. "We haven't really made up our mind on that at this stage," Pike said yesterday. "We were very pleased with her work this morning [Tuesday] and we're looking forward to running her on Saturday, it's just a case of deciding which race is more suitable for her." Pike added: "We'll probably make up our minds on that tomorrow morning [Wednesday]. At the moment I'd say we'd be leaning slightly towards the Oaks." Whichever race Pike selects for Provocative, her breeding and progressive profile suggests she will be highly competitive regardless. Not only is she by renowned stamina influence and classic-producing sire Zabeel, but her dam is the New Zealand-bred mare Betwixt (O'Reilly), winner of the 2009 edition of the Gr3 Tasmanian Derby over 2200 metres.
