Stradbroke Likely For Kaepernick
Enigmatic but brilliant sprinter Kaepernick looks set to contest Saturday's Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm after winning an 800m trial at the Sunshine Coast yesterday, reports AAP. Michael Hawkes, who trains the son of Fastnet Rock in partnership with his father John and brother Wayne, said the hit-out should top Kaepernick off nicely for Saturday's $1.5 million winter showpiece. The 4YO is also entered in the Gr2 QTC Cup (1300m) which was rescheduled for Saturday after last weekend's abandoned Eagle Farm meeting. "We want to see how Kaepernick comes up after the trial," Hawkes said. "We also have to speak with the owners again. A decision isn't likely until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning." Hawkes added: "This horse has had a lot of bad luck in his career but he is right now. The only reason be won't race in either the Stradbroke or QTC cup on Saturday is on the unlikely chance the weather turns wet again." A $400,000 Magic Millions purchase, Kaepernick is out of the Stravinsky mare Volcada and hails from the same female family as Gr1 Doomben 10,000 winner Ideal Planet and Gr1 Queensland Derby winner Our Planet.
