Azkadellia Draws Perfectly For Stradbroke
Meanwhile, trainer Ciaron Maher's hopes of becoming only the fourth trainer in recent times to claim successive Stradbroke Handicaps received a major boost when favourite Azkadellia drew well for the $1.5 million Gr1 feature at Eagle Farm on Saturday, reports Racing Queensland. Azkadellia was the last horse drawn from the 18-horse field at yesterday's barrier draw but Maher is hoping the 4YO mare will be the first home after drawing gate five. The New Zealand-bred mare secured her maiden Gr1 success when winning the Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Randwick in April before finishing second to Music Magnate in the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 last month. "We left it to the last (with the barrier) but I couldn't be any happier and she's pulled up well from her gallop yesterday," Maher said. "Hopefully from the barrier she'll get a good run in transit. She really needs a little luck in running." He added: "It was a blistering speed in the Doomben 10,000 but she's come out of it well." Maher won last year's Stradbroke Handicap with Srikandi who came off a sixth to Boban in the Doomben 10,000. If Azkadellia is successful, Maher will join Bart Cummings, John Wheeler and Con Karakatsanis as the only trainers to win successive Stradbroke Handicaps in the past 30 years.
