Howard Be Thy Name Chasing Historic Double
Howard Be Thy Name has drawn perfectly in barrier two as he attempts to become the first horse in history to win the South Australian & Queensland Derby double at Eagle Farm on Saturday, reports Racing.com. The son of Redoute's Choice is coming off a fast finishing third (beaten 0.3-length) behind the highly regarded Mackintosh in the Gr3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m), a performance his trainer Darren Weir believes was a top trial for Saturday's $600,000 Gr1 Queensland Derby (2400m). "I thought he was really good (last start), obviously it was his first time that way, he just had to change course, he was steaming home really well," Weir said. "It looked a nice trial for the Derby, he has done well since, unfortunately the weather has been a bit hit and miss up there so he probably missed one gallop but he was very fit going up there so that won't probably matter." As a direct descendant of the Vice Regal mare Richebourg, Howard Be Thy Name hails from the same female family as multiple Group winner and Gr1 placegetter Romanee Conti, the dam of Melbourne and Caulfield Cup heroine Ethereal. Other members of this esteemed clan include Australasian Oaks winner Grand Echezeaux and 5-time Gr1-winning sire Darci Brahma. Howard Be Thy Name is the current $5 TAB favourite for Saturday's Queensland Derby.
