Oaks For Provocative

Thursday, 9th June 2016

Talented Kiwi filly Provocative will run in Saturday's Gr1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm, reports theinformant.co.nz. Trainer Tony Pike was considering running Provocative against the boys in the Queensland Derby on the same day, but has opted to stick with his original plan and run in the $500,000 fillies classic. "It was a hard decision, but she was already in the Oaks field and we couldn't pay up for both races," Pike explained. "The owners already have Rodrico in the Derby, so we decided to stick with the Oaks." He added: "The wide draw [20] is a touch of a concern, but hopefully the track will be playing okay and Leith [jockey Leith Innes] can get across and give her a good run." Provocative's pedigree suggests she will be highly competitive on Saturday. Not only is she by renowned stamina influence and classic-producing sire Zabeel, but her dam is the New Zealand-bred mare Betwixt (O'Reilly), winner of the 2009 edition of the Gr3 Tasmanian Derby over 2200 metres.
