Exaggerator Draws Wide For Belmont

Friday, 10th June 2016

Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator (Curlin-Dawn Raid, by Vindication) has drawn barrier 11 in a field of 13 for Saturday's final leg of the US Triple Crown, the US$1.5 million Gr1 Belmont Stakes in New York, reports Blood Horse. Trainer Keith Desormeaux expressed slight concern about the wide draw given the starting position of the gates at Belmont Park. "The gates here are placed around the wire, which means there's not that much of a run-up," Desormeaux said. "It's not as inconsequential as it is in the other two races, so I'd prefer not to be on the outside, because we have to take back and drop in. Three-sixteenths (to the turn) is a decent run, but not enough - not enough to say that the gates don't matter." However, Desormeaux's brother and Exaggerator's rider, Kent Desormeaux, was unfazed with the draw. "I think it's a wonderful post position," Kent Desormeaux said. "I can't see any horses that will cross over on him. We should be able to establish position, preferably, without getting a grain of sand in his face." 5-1 second favourite for the Belmont, Stradivari, who finished fourth in the Preakness, drew well in barrier 5. "Stradivari, I think you can make a case that he was behind schedule a little bit leading into the Preakness and sometimes a race like that will move him forward. That's' what we're hoping," Stradivari's trainer Todd Pletcher said. The field for the Gr1 Belmont Stakes is:

1. Governor Malibu (Christophe Clement) 12-1

2. Destin (Todd Pletcher) 6-1

3. Cherry Wine (Dale Romans) 8-1

4. Suddenbreakingnews (Donnie Von Hemel) 10-1

5. Stradivari (Todd Pletcher) 5-1

6. Gettysburg (Todd Pletcher) 30-1

7. Seeking the Soul (Dallas Stewart) 30-1

8. Forever d'Oro (Dallas Stewart) 30-1

9. Trojan Nation (Patrick Gallagher) 30-1

10. Lani (Mikio Matsunaga) 20-1

11. Exaggerator (Keith Desormeaux) 9-5

12. Brody's Cause (Dale Romans) 20-1

13. Creator (Steve Asmussen) 10-1
