Creator Wins Gr1 Belmont Stakes

Tuesday, 14th June 2016

On a weekend when many of the US Belmont Park's big Gr1s fell to horses whose names start with a C, Gr1 Arkansas Derby-winning colt Creator (Tapit-Morena, by Privately Held) put in a late run for trainer Steve Asmussen after saving ground on the paint to land the US$1.5 million Gr1 Belmont Stakes (12 furlongs) for 3YOs. The US$440,000 graduate of Keeneland's 2014 September Yearling Sale bypassed the first two legs of the US Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, to go back-to-back with a 2 month break between runs. Runner-up, beaten just a nose (see below), was fellow colt and long time leader Destin (Giant's Causeway-Dream Of Summer, by Siberian Summer), ahead of the colt Lani (Tapit-Heavenly Romance, by Sunday Silence) whose dam won Japan's Gr1 Tenno Sho. Creator took his growing record to 3 wins & 5 placings (including the Gr2 Rebel Stales at Oaklawn) from 10 starts for US$1,568,320 earnings. Favourite Exaggerator, who won the Gr1 Preakness Stakes, finished out of the placings.
