Provocative Wins Gr1 Queensland Oaks

Tuesday, 14th June 2016

Providing Kiwi trainer Tony Pike with a memorable Gr1 double on Stradbroke Day after Sacred Elixir captured the Gr1 JJ Atkins Stakes (see above), Cambridge Stud's deceased super-sire Zabeel provided yet another Gr1 winner to add to his remarkable record when talented filly Provocative (Zabeel-Betwixt, by O'Reilly) vanquished her rivals by 3-lengths in the $500,000 Gr1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) for 3YO fillies at Eagle Farm. Provocative became Zabeel's 45th individual Gr1 winner, equalling the record of his own Cambridge Stud sire Sir Tristram. Ambience (Street Cry-Miss Right Note, by Daylami) & Falkenberg (More Than Ready-Purespesd, by Flying Spur) finished together, well ahead of the rest of the field. A NZ$250,000 purchase consigned by Curraghmore Stud at the 2014 NZB National Yearling Sales Series, lightly raced Provocative took her record to 4 wins from 7 starts for $350,534 earnings. Her dam Betwixt won the Gr3 Tasmanian Derby and is out of a half-sister to Taupo Retreat, winner of South Africa's Gr1 November Handicap at the now defunct Gosforth Park in Johannesburg.
