Under The Louvre Wins Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap

Tuesday, 14th June 2016

In the third of Eagle Farm's quartet of Gr1 features last Saturday, perennial feature race bridegroom, 5YO entire Under The Louvre (Excellent Art-Barcelona Girl, by Noverre), narrowly outpointed top-weight 5YO gelding Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) in a thrilling stretch duel to win the $1.5 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) for trainer Robert Smerdon. In third place, at the astonishing odds of $151, was lightly raced 3YO gelding The Virginian (Hinchinbrook-Redwood Dancer, by Forestry). Coming into the race off a runner-up behind Black Heart Bart in the Gr1 Goodwood Handicap, the duo renewed their Adelaide rivalry in exciting fashion. The win, his first since March 2015, took Under The Louvre's record to 9 wins (including the Listed Hareeba Stakes & Listed Headquarters Tavern Stakes) & 13 placings (including the Gr1 Goodwood Handicap – twice – Gr1 Oakleigh Plate, Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, Gr2 Bobbie Lewis Handicap Gr3 Moonga Stakes – twice – Listed Sofitel Handicap, Listed Anniversary Vase & Listed Bel Esprit Stakes) from 29 starts for $1,761,701 earnings. Under The Louvre was a $50,000 yearling consigned by Kanangra Stud at the 2012 Inglis Classic Sale.
