Galileo Gold Wins Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes
On day one of the Royal Ascot carnival in the UK, Waikato Stud's three-time Gr1-winning shuttler Paco Boy (Desert Srtyle-Tappen Zee, by Sandhurst Prince) celebrated an elite success when 3YO colt Galileo Gold (Paco Boy-Galicuix, by Galileo) scored by 1.25-lengths for trainer Hugo Palmer and jockey Frankie Dettori in the Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes (8 furlongs), over fellow 3YO colts The Gurkha (Galileo-Chintz, by Danehill Dancer) & Awtaad (Cape Cross-Asheerah, by Shamardal). Galileo Gold improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 English 2000 Guineas & Gr2 Vintage Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas) from 8 starts for £481,706 earnings. "It was a tough challenge but he's the 2000 Guineas winner, and Newmarket's 2000 Guineas is usually the best Group One of the year," said winning trainer Hugo Palmer. "He was given the most magnificent ride - everyone knows there isn't a better pilot round here than Frankie." He added: "I think it's fair to say he's the best three-year-old colt in Europe." Harry Herbert, racing manager for Al Shaqab Racing, said Galileo Gold was likely to make his next appearance in the Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
