Songbird Returns On Saturday

Friday, 17th June 2016

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has declared champion US filly Songbird "ready" as she looks to restart her interrupted 3YO season in Saturday's $200,000 Gr2 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita Park, reports Blood Horse. The 4-time Gr1 winner was sidelined with a fever that ruled her out of last month's Kentucky Oaks, but a typically brilliant piece of work last weekend has her primed to extended her unbeaten record to eight. In her latest hit-out, Hollendorfer started Songbird five lengths behind a pair of workmates and had her split the two in the stretch. "We wanted to make sure she could wait," Fox Hill owner Rick Porter said. "She did it all on her own. She stayed about three lengths behind them, got asked at the quarter pole, and split the horses. (Hollendorfer) wanted to get that in her, not so much for this race, but for the future." A US$400,00 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro-Ivanavinalot, by West Acre) is unbeaten in her seven starts to date that include top-flight wins in the Santa Anita Oaks, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Chandelier Stakes, and Debutante Stakes.
