Chrome Impresses In Los Alamitos Work
California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit-Love the Chase, by Not for Love) continued his build-up to his next assignment in the Gr2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on 23 July with a six furlong gallop at Los Alamitos racecourse on Saturday, reports Blood Horse. Trainer Art Sherman said the most pleasing aspect of the 5YOs workout was how he finished off the gallop. "The last part is where he kicks it in and the finish - once he goes out and goes around that turn - that shows his stamina is getting stronger," Sherman said. "His gallop-out each time is stronger. He's really going seven-eighths of a mile. It doesn't look like it, but that's what he does. He does everything kinda effortlessly." Sherman said next month's San Diego Handicap will serve as a preparatory race for the US$1 million Gr1 Pacific Classic at the same track on 20 August. He has previously stated that California Chrome's primary end-of-year targets are the Breeders' Cup Classic and the inaugural running of the US$12 million Pegasus World Championship in January. The 2014 US Horse of the Year is undefeated in all three starts this year after powering to a 3.75-length win in the US$10 million Gr1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan racecourse on 26 March. The victory was also an historic one for the 5YO who became the richest North American racehorse of all time with earnings of US$12,532,650, eclipsing 2008 Dubai World Cup winner Curlin's haul of US$10,501,800.
