Songbird Still Perfect

Monday, 20th June 2016

Champion US filly Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro-Ivanavinalot, by West Acre) maintained her unbeaten record when cruising to yet another imperious victory in the US$200,000 Gr2 Summertime Oaks (8.5 furlongs) at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. Having her first start since recovering from a fever that knocked her out of contention for the Kentucky Oaks, the 4-time Gr1 winner showed why many believe she is destined for greatness when strolling to an effortless 6.5-length win in the 3YO fillies feature. US Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, for one, was simply in awe of Songbird's performance. "It scares me to think of how good she is," Smith told Blood Horse. "I try not to think of it." A US$400,00 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Songbird is now unbeaten in her eight starts to date that including top-flight wins in the Santa Anita Oaks, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Chandelier Stakes, and Debutante Stakes. Her latest win boosted her prize money to US$2,102,000. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Songbird would be restricted to her own sex for now, with possible targets including the Gr1 Coaching Club American Oaks on 24 July and Gr1 Cotillion Stakes on 24 September. "I think we'll stick with the girls for now and see what happens," Hollendorfer said.
