Darley Classic Confirmed For Lankan Rupee

Tuesday, 21st June 2016

Trainer Mick Price has confirmed that the Gr1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington is the primary target for Lankan Rupee (Redoute's Choice-Estelle Collection, by Stravinsky) should he make a complete recovery from injury in time for the spring. The 5-time Gr1 winning sprinter was diagnosed with bone necrosis after finishing a lacklustre third in the Gr2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) in October. Price is hopeful that Lankan Rupee can launch his belated spring campaign in that very same race, but said he will go straight to the Darley Classic if necessary. "He's good. He's had a longer and slower rehab with ground walking, a bit of water walker and then he went up to Ballarat last week for a scintigraphy [scan] and got a good report," Price told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "I'm not sure if we can make the Schillaci into the Darley, or whether he just goes into the Darley first-up." He added: "He's got about another three weeks in the paddock and then we'll commence his prep. If he gets one run or two runs then good, if not he will be cherry ripe in the autumn hopefully."
