Former Hong Kong Galloper Ready For Sydney Debut

Tuesday, 21st June 2016

Trainer John Sargent says he is happy with former Hong Kong galloper Smart Volatility (Danewin-Something Funny, by Baryshnikov) who will make his Australian debut in the Winter Dash (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Despite being bred in Australian, the 7YO gelding has done all of his racing hitherto in his adopted homeland where he won 6 of 23 starts for HK$7.4 million in prize money. Courtesy of several Group placings in Hong Kong, including a third behind Peniaphobia in last year's Gr1 Centenary Sprint Cup (1000m), Smart Volatility is easily the highest rated horse in Saturday's open sprint handicap and consequently has been allotted a hefty 61kg. "He was a Group One placegetter in Hong Kong so he's obviously going to get 61 kilos and we will claim three with Andrew Adkins," Sargent told AAP. "He is a lovely horse and has had two trials and won them both." Sargent is also confident that Smart Volatility will handle soft ground if Sydney's wet weather persists. "I think he is fit enough and although I don't think he wants it too heavy, he has won his trials on wet tracks, so he will handle at least slow which looks like what we are likely to get," he said. "He got injured in Hong Kong so he came here to recover. He was very highly rated in Hong Kong and I'm pleased to have him."
