Maher Bidding For Rare Tiara Double
Ciaron Maher will bid to become just the second trainer to win successive editions of the Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) when Azkadellia contests the fillies and mares feature at Eagle Farm on Saturday. If Azkadellia is successful on Saturday, Maher will join former Sydney trainer Graeme Begg as the only two-time winner of the race after Srikandi captured the winter feature last year. Begg is the only other trainer to achieve the feat courtesy of brilliant mare Bonanova's wins in 1999 and 2000 (when it was known as the Gr3 Winter Stakes). "I was hoping to go back-to-back in the Stradbroke but we missed out so now hopefully it's this one," Maher said. Azkadellia won the Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes in Sydney during the autumn and then finished second in the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 before failing in the Stradbroke. Maher gave Azkadellia the green light to run in the Tattersall's Tiara after her stylish trackwork this week. "She's pulled up well. She was just in the wrong part of the track in the Stradbroke and her fitness levels are pretty good," Maher said. "We ended up on the inside in the Stradbroke and that was clearly not the place to be. Hopefully we can find the right path this week." Melbourne jockey Nick Hall will ride Azkadellia for the first time replacing Damien Oliver who partnered the mare in the Stradbroke.
