Harzand Wins Gr1 Irish Derby

Monday, 27th June 2016

At The Curragh in Ireland, 3YO colt Harzand (Sea the Stars-Hazariya, by Xaar) claimed a Classic double when scoring by a determined 0.5-length for trainer Dermot Weld in the Gr1 Irish Derby (12 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Idaho (Galileo-Hveger, by Danehill) & Stellar Mass (Sea the Stars-Juno Marlowe, by Danehill). Bred and owned by His Highness the Aga Khan, Harzand improved his record to 4 wins (including the Gr1 Epsom Derby & Gr3 Ballysax Stakes) from 5 starts for £1,581,438 earnings. Trainer Dermot Weld was full of praise for Harzand whom he said would now be rested and prepared for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October. "He ran a magnificent race. He showed the speed that he has today. People were saying he didn't have speed, well you saw it today," Weld told Sky Sports. "Those two horses really picked up and quickened. Idaho is a high-class horse, he's always been that and he was at his best today. It was a great day, a great ride - a special day. It was a proper horse race." he added: "He'll have a good break now and we'll train him for the Arc." Harzand will now bid to emulate Sinndar by adding the Arc to his two Derby wins.
