Mainland Debut For Star TAS 3YO
Tasmanian Derby winner Jerilderie Letter (Bushranger-Pirate's Sirene, by Portland Pirate) is set to make his mainland debut in the Grand Hotel Frankston Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, reports AAP. The Adam Trinder-trained gelding stamped himself as Tasmania's best 3YO last season with 6 wins from 8 starts, including feature wins in the Listed Tasmanian Derby, Listed Hobart Guineas & Listed Tasmanian Guineas. Underscoring the strength of his Tasmanian Derby victory is the fact that runner-up Howard Be Thy Name went on to claim Gr1 honours when landing the Gr1 South Australian Derby in May. Trinder said Jerilderie Letter's primary winter target is the $120,000 Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) at Flemington on 9 July, but he also has one eye on a spring carnival campaign later in the year. "He's a horse that has always flown under the radar. As a two-year-old he showed very little and even on race day he can be underrated because he only ever does what is asked of him," Trinder told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "We will get a good assessment of him in these two Melbourne runs. It will tell us whether to raise the bar and potentially give him an opportunity in Melbourne in October and November...It's a learning curve with him."
