Almandin Wins Gr3 The Bart Cummings

Tuesday, 4th October 2016

At Flemington in Melbourne, favoured imported 7YO German-bred gelding Almandin (Monsun-Anatola, by Tiger Hill) registered his second successive stakes victory since arriving in Australia when scoring by 1.5-lengths for trainer Robert Hickmott in the $300,000 Gr3 Bart Cummings Handicap (2500m), over 7YO mare Manteca (Zabel-Princess Quillo, by Zoffany) & imported 7YO entire Excess Knowledge (Monsun-Quenched, by Dansili). The lightly raced Macedon Lodge gelding appeared to have clicked into another gear when winning the recent Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) at Caulfield late last month, and looked even more comfortable when backing up a week later on Sunday. Now automatically qualified to run in the Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Almandin is unlikely to run again before the $6.2 million feature where his form and light weight have seen his odds cut to $15.00. The Lloyd & Nick Williams-owned Almandin improved his record to 4 wins (also including the Gr2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Unternehmer) and 4 placings from 11 starts for $347,191 earnings.
